Student Teaching

Governor Wolf Elementary

I had a wonderful student teaching experience with Ms. Eilers and her fourth-grade class. These eight weeks were filled with so many accomplishments, highs and lows, and learning experiences. I remember my first day of student teaching I was so nervous for the unexpected. I had never been in a fourth-grade classroom and there were so many doubts. When the last day came, I did not want to leave my mentor teacher or the students. I loved every minute of being with fourth grade. The students helped me grow as a learner and as an educator. They taught me things as much as I taught them. The intelligence and drive that they had inspired me. The connection and relationship I built with the students progressed as the weeks went on, and I built a rapport with them. I believe that because of this, I had a successful experience with teaching them. I taught the entire day and with subjects including mathematics, Leader in Me, Social Studies, Wonders, small groups, and a SLO. The SLO was done within the course of a week with seven students and focused on division facts with up to three-digit dividends. I planned and implemented activities and games to increase the students' progress with division. The students took a pre-test and a post-test and all students had improved which was a an accomplishment for not only them, but myself as well. With the class, I incorporated technology, and hands-on experiences for the students. The more I learned about the students, the more it helped me to teach them and reflect. One of my favorite lessons I did with the students was a Geography jeopardy game I made. I split the students into teams and they played over the course of a few days. They enjoyed this game and always looked forward to playing it after lunch. Seeing them excited made me excited. It was such a great tool for them to practice their geography vocabulary in an engaging way. This semester was when I truly started seeing myself as a teacher rather than a student.
